Entering The Darkness

In my Survey and Media class, my professor gave us a 24-hour challenge to go without media. My Professor is under the impression that we won't be able to go through with this assignment and speaking for myself, I have proved her right! You never realize how much you use media for everything. Media is destroying our society's people skills little by little.

I felt like I had nothing to do except stare at a wall. I kept forgetting that I was not supposed to use any media and kept using my phone off impulse. We don't realize how much we use media just off the simple fact that we are bored. If we feel lonely, or don't know anybody in the room, we only use our phones to avoid talking to people. I believe that the Gen- Zer generation has so many problems with anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues because we put so much focus on social media being the center of our life.

We don't even deal with practical problems head-on. I believe that the generation under us will have more kids with ADHD OR ADD than past generations because they were born into the advancement of media. Kids have tablets and other sources of media, younger and younger these days. This generation has created a lot more stalkers and killers than past generations because we share so much information about ourselves online, that finding out someone's personal information has become easy. Our age is so stuck behind their computers that sometimes we can't even introduce ourselves to new people.

Privacy has become a word with no meaning. We don't even realize that we are letting people see things about us that should be private. A Lot of relationships get ruined because of media and how willing people are to put out all their personal information. You don't realize how much power lies within the privacy. So in total, I went all of 12-15 hours. Most of it was because I went to sleep so that I wouldn't go on my phone, and I just tried talking to my roommates. Also, not being able to watch Netflix or Hulu left me not knowing what I should do. If we just had all sources of media taken away from us, we would feel like we are in the apocalypse.

Media is everywhere. And everything is media from our cars to our houses. I feel like going an entire day without your phone is very difficult. The only way I think I would be able to do so is if I was work for 24 hours and left my phone at home and there was no way anyone would be able to come and bring it to me. My experience with this challenge has honestly been so funny. I can't believe I didn't have the strength to go a whole 24 hours without using media. It's just apart of us in this generation. Media has grown with us to where it is just normalized. One thing I can say about not using media is that it helps you get things done. If you sit there with no t .v, phone, music, etc. you start to do different tasks that you should be doing on a regular.

For example, you should always keep your room clean, but because I couldn't use media, I cleaned everything in my room that I possibly could. I cleaned out my closet and gave things to my roommates that I don't even wear anymore. I got all my laundry done, ironed my clothes, and got all my books together for the next day so I wasn't rushing in the morning. I also got excellent rest. I think it's only because I wasn't using media, so I wasn't staying up all night on my phone.

If you're sitting in the dark with no media on you, have no other choice but to go to sleep. In conclusion, I think I'm going to try this challenge again because I got a lot of things done that I should be doing on a regular. And also it opened my eyes as to how media has taken over the world.
